6 ways to leverage social media for a bigger cause

"All we're saying is give peace a chance"... My neighbor, Mr. Social hums this tune all the time! After all, “The Beatles” is a lovable band to all of us! This is not the only cause he sings it over and over again. Our Mr. Social is de facto a philanthropic and an avowed humanitarian. He loves mankind and wants to save it in every way. Thus, he blogs, tweets, shares and delivers his altruistic messages to the world. He supports various Causes, donates funds, invites people to join in and makes the world nobler.

However, it is interesting to know that he does it all by moving around his mouse on his laptop! Of course, Social Media gives him the luxury of fulfilling his benign ideas without making him a wanderer. Social Media allows you to actualize your humanitarian plans without any rallies, violence or dividing sects. It is a humble way of igniting the spirit of humanity among the masses, awaken their souls and make the world a peaceful abode. If you want to aid a cause as well, you’re warmly welcomed to the social network; where your some clicks could change many lives. Here are some ways you can support the social causes and raise awareness through social media.
1. Make it viral
Reach out people. Spread the word. Tell the world why they should support you; explain your cause to them. blog about it, share on your walls in order to send it across the world. Reason with the people who do not believe that change can happen through a virtual world. Break their illusions about this seemingly unreal world, since a survey records that 80% of the population on these networking sites have access to online payment methods. So, the world can really donate and help raising the funds of the non-profit Facebook/Twitter page. You could also post some pictures that would further shape up your cause and would help people understand it better.

2. Leverage, yes! You need to!
To reach out to the masses, you need to associate your cause with some influential group or person to firm your voice. It doesn’t mean that you can’t work alone or with a group of commoners to raise the awareness. But famous personalities or groups guarantee success. The world dances to their tune, so it’s always better to let them listen whom they want to. These are influencing techniques, of luring people to a good cause. There is nothing wrong in drawing people’s attention towards a social cause (that severely needs to be noticed). After all, as Howard W. Buffett rightly says that “The purpose of innovation is to make us better at being human”. Hence do not hesitate in influencing the masses and direct them towards awareness.
3. Get noticed
A blog by Sara Lancaster sounds interesting! She suggests writing your own press releases and sending it to free online press release distribution sites. Or else what we networking people can do is post your press releases on your pages. Announce your followers (or your not-so-followers) that you’re taking the step ahead for real, it’s not an illusion; that you can go ahead and reach media to spread across your word. Come in the limelight. Your cause doesn’t need publicity, it needs attention!
4. Activate your followers
It’s time to substantiate! Yes. Demonstrate your cause through videos and pictures. Share them with the world around. It will definitely be a booster. Use pictures and videos to cultivate the human emotion and awaken them. Besides sharing it on your page on Facebook or Twitter, you can always post them on You tube. People understand better with images than words!

5. Encourage Participation
Discussions are always better than a monologue, aren’t they? Create polls, initiate debates and ask for your followers’ opinions. Any time a meeting is going to take place or an event or anything major you want to do with the page or outside it (regarding the cause), make sure that you always ask your followers. Make them feel like community and allow them to voice out their views.

6. Invite the “Young Guns”
“Mentor young people to use social media for social good.” says Carrie James.
If you want to make your cause strong, you got to welcome the youth. Encourage young people to join in. You can reach them by adding shareable videos and pictures. Demonstration always excites the young minds. Make them watch what is happening around them. Arouse them, provoke them to take an action!
So, go ahead, make a move and sing along with Mr. Social the Peace anthem and give it a chance!
Make it happen because it's not only about you anymore...
